Disaster Preparedness at Falmouth Memorial Library

Disaster Preparedness at Falmouth Memorial Library

Public libraries are tasked with the responsibility of connecting people with their reading interests as well as important information for their well-being. Recently, the news of “zombies crossing” Maine streets hit the media and spread quickly throughout the country. Just how accurate are these sightings? Is the zombie apocalypse we have heard so much about finally striking close to home?
Should I run to the library to do some research, or just check out some heavy books to use in my fight
against the undead horde?

In all seriousness, yes you should come to the library, but not to arm yourself with a book as a weapon, rather to arm yourself with important information on how to survive a natural disaster. In October, Falmouth Memorial Library kicked off a series of events called “The End is Near…well, probably not, but are you prepared for any disaster?” The lecture series is designed to prepare Falmouth families for natural disasters with information on food and water safety, first aid and a variety of emergency preparedness events.

Why the talk of zombies? Well, many organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), have found that talking to people about preparing for zombies is more entertaining than talking about the next hurricane or ice storm. The important preparedness information is the same, so why not have a little fun with it?

We began our series by hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on October 17. Donating to help save a life is a great way for an individual to help their community prepare for any emergency.

Our next scheduled event on Tuesday, November 6 at 6:30 pm will feature information on food safety in emergency situations. Join University of Maine Cooperative Extension to learn more about the basics of keeping food and water supplies safe during unexpected emergency situations like power outages, floods and more!

Over the coming months, the Library will host a number of similar events including: emergency preparedness and basic first aid with Falmouth Fire & EMS, medicinal and poisonous plants with a specialist, a visit from Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency to discuss State preparations, and many more.

We have scheduled some fun events, too. For example, on December 21 – the date the Mayan calendar “ends” – we will show the film Night of the Living Dead at 7 pm.

Of course we can’t forget that Halloween closes out this month. For the kids and kids at heart we have some fun Halloween events planned. Join Mr. Will at 10:00 am for a special Halloween Storytime. The Library will also take part in author Neil Gaiman’s All Hallow’s Read event. Stop by between 5:00-7:00 pm to select a scary book for your trick-or-treat bag. We have a number of donated books for all readers – children and adults alike. So stop by … if you dare.

If you have any questions about the End is Near… lecture series or about library programs, please
contact Jeannie Madden, Head of User Services, at jmadden@falmouth.lib.me.us or 781-2351 x206

Falmouth High School Students Chosen for Jazz All-State Festival

Falmouth High School Students Chosen for Jazz All-State Festival

Several Falmouth High School music students received good news after undergoing rigorous auditions last week for the Maine Jazz All-State Festival. The results are out, and eight Falmouth band and chorus students were selected to perform at the festival.

The students are:

Kelsey Coyne (soprano)

Riley Engelberger (bass)

Alexandra Ertman (baritone sax)

Matt Estabrook (bass)

Alex Han (piano)

Nick Groat (drums)

Emma Mooradian (alto sax)

Julia Warnock (soprano)

“We are proud of the hard work of our musicians,” says Falmouth High School chorus teacher Wendy Northrup. “It is a great accomplishment to be accepted to Jazz All-State.”

Falmouth band director Jim Horwich says it’s the first time in recent history that the school has had four band students who were selected for the honors level and above at the festival.

The Maine Music Educators Association organizes the annual Jazz All-State Festival, which will be held January 3-5, 2013, at Bangor High School. The festival features high school singers and instrumentalists from all parts of Maine who rehearse together intensively for two days, culminating in a concert. Professional musicians from outside of Maine lead various combinations and groups of the students, alongside music teachers from various Maine schools.

Last year’s Jazz All-State Festival performance has been featured multiple times as part of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s television and radio programming. Several Falmouth music students were highlighted in those broadcasts.

Maine Advocacy Group Touts National Report as Example of the Affordable Care Act Working

A Report Released by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Shows a Significant Decrease in Uninsured Young Adults up to the age of 26

(Augusta) The Health Care for Maine (HC4ME) Alliance Steering Committee today applauded a report released by the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) in Washington, DC. The report showed a dramatic decrease in the number of uninsured young adults up to the age of 26. According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of the uninsured in the young adult age bracket (19-25) was reduced to 27.9%, down from 33.9% in 2010. That represents the largest decrease among any age group since the CDC began keeping track of this data in 1997. The provision allowing young adults to remain on their parents' health insurance coverage up until the age of 26, which came into effect as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as "ObamaCare," in September of 2010, is credited for positive change in coverage for previously uninsured young adults. That provision is the only major change in national health policy affecting insurance coverage for this age group in every state, and analysts agree the change would have an impact of this magnitude.

"Extending coverage to age 26 has been a huge benefit for young adults, particularly during the tough economic climate of the past few years," said Jen Mishory, deputy director of the non-profit youth advocacy group, Young Invincibles. "Young people are less likely to have access to jobs with benefits, and young adults have also had the highest unemployment rate of any age group during the recession. This provision has given young people piece of mind and financial security as they graduate from high school and college and look to start their adult lives."

According to the other data collected by the CDC, the overall number of the uninsured in the United States was reduced to 46.3 million people. While this stopped an upwards trend of uninsured people over the past two years, that number is still higher than pre-recession totals. The number of people with private insurance coverage continued to decline for those between 26 and 64 years of age. Many of the provisions in the ACA, which will help increase coverage for those in the private insurance market, go into effect in 2014.

Ned McCann, executive director of the Maine Children's Alliance (MCA), highlighted the CDC's findings on the number of uninsured children in the United States. "Thanks to federal programs like the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), 93% of the children in America have health insurance. Hopefully with further implementation of the ACA, more of their parents will also gain access to health insurance," said McCann.

Joe Ditré, executive director of Consumers for Affordable Health Care said, "Allowing young adults to stay on their parent's health insurance is one of a series of positive changes to private insurance in all states as a result of the President's health plan called the Affordable Care Act. Since being implemented in September 2010, it is estimated that 9,000 young adults up to the age of 26 have benefited from this provision in Maine alone. That is good news for Maine's young adults, gives peace of mind to their parents, and should help to lower insurance premiums as a greater number of younger, healthier Mainers get coverage."

The HC4ME Alliance Steering Committee consists of: the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Consumers for Affordable Health Care, Maine Center for Economic Policy, Maine Children's Alliance, Maine Equal Justice Partners, Maine Medical Association, Maine People's Alliance, and the Maine People's Resource Center. The Alliance also consists of 31 other endorsing Maine organizations and groups.

Soccer Coaching Clinic: NYSCA Certification

Mandatory for FCP Soccer Coaches

A FREE soccer coaching clinic is scheduled for those parent volunteers who are vital to our program.

Fundamentals, instructional ideas and tips on working with youth players will be addressed. Outside
soccer organizations are welcome to attend, but will be charged $20 for certification. Upon completion
of this clinic, coaches will have a grasp on how to manage and coach a team for the fall season. The first half of the clinic (held outdoors) will require the attendance of both new and veteran FCP coaches, while the second part will require just the new coaches. Remember, without an adequate coaching staff, Falmouth Community Programs cannot allow as many children to participate in the program. Thank you for volunteering. Please wear shorts and sneakers.
