"ILLUMINATING the Beauty and Tragedy of Darfur"

6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012

The exhibition of The Beauty and Tragedy of Darfur at Falmouth High School's new gallery space in the theater lobby is going to be a very special event!

View inspiring and breathtaking works of art created by Falmouth student artists representing Darfur’s beauty contrasted with the tragic genocide.

The spectacular Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus, directed by Con Fullam, who were recently featured on the Today Show, will be lending their voices to this occasion. We are also delighted to have the Malika Sudanese dancers performing. Sudanese food will be available to sample.

Artwork, books, and other merchandise will be available for sale to support United to End Genocide and The Fur Cultural Revival. Pihcintu CDs will also be available for sale.

El- Fadel Arbab, lecturer, a survivor of the genocide in Darfur, and friend to many Falmouth students met with the students to share his story and educate them about life in Darfur and the genocide. It was from those meetings and further research on the students’ part that the art was inspired and created.

We are also delighted to announce that a book about El Fadel Arbab's life, My Grandfather Said Climb a Tree and Look for the Light will be released this April. His first book signing will be at this event. The book price is $20.00.

This event is free, however donations will be gratefully received to benefit United to End Genocide and the Fur Cultural Revival. Go to http://www.falmouthschools.org/File/Darfur_invite.jpg

Should I buy or rent?

It’s the eternal question in real estate: Should I buy or rent?

The answer has never been clearer: BUY

Just this past week, Trulia reported that in 98 of the top 100 housing markets, owning is more affordable on a monthly basis than renting.

There are two major reasons: Home prices are low; and mortgage interest rates are historically low (even with increases this past week!)
Of course, many renters are not in a position to buy. For one, many are not in a position credit-wise to be approved for a mortgage. And, two, most have difficulty saving up for the costs of buying a new home.
Did you know there are lots of government loan programs that make it easier for renters to buy a home?

FHA loans require only 3.5% down payment and seller’s can help with closing costs! PLUS, all the cash to close can be from a gift (ie. Not from the buyers’ savings)!

VA has no down payment and the seller can pay for all cost for closing! Did you know that Maine is one of the top states in Veteran and Reservist population?

Rural Housing has no down payment and cost for closing can either be rolled into the loan or paid by the seller!

Discussion on the Downtown Corridors: Franklin and Spring Streets

TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 7 PM, Downtown Corridors: Franklin and Spring Streets

Moderator: Alan Stearns, Executive Director, Royal River Conservation Trust, with Alex Jaegerman, Director of Planning, City of Portland, David Robinson, Executive Vice President, Greater Portland Landmarks, Markos Miller, Chair, Franklin Street Redesign Study

Efforts to modernize and streamline traffic flow through Portland in the 1960s and ‘70s disrupted neighborhoods, demolished buildings, and fundamentally altered the historic feel of parts of the city. What are our options moving forward? Stakeholders will share their ideas, discuss current initiatives, and consider what future development along Franklin and Spring Streets might look like.

Each program will include a moderator plus three speakers representing a variety of perspectives related to the topic followed by discussion with the audience. All programs take place at the Maine Historical Society, 489 Congress Street, Portland
