The World of Mary O’Connell: A Social History of Ireland’s 19th Century Catholic Middle Class Lecture

The World of Mary O’Connell: A Social History of Ireland’s 19th Century Catholic Middle Class

Presented by Dr. Erin Bishop Sunday, April 29 2 p.m.
Maine Irish Heritage Center Corner of State and Gray Streets Portland, Maine

In 1800, Daniel O’Connell, a young barrister who had just made a start in Irish nationalist politics, began a clandestine correspondence with a distant cousin, Mary O’Connell of Tralee, County Kerry. Two years later, Daniel married the dowerless Mary, jeopardizing his inheritance and sealing a deep bond that continued through his rise to international prominence and election to the British Parliament. It would be severed only by Mary’s death in 1836. The public life of Daniel O’Connell, called “The Liberator” or “The Emancipator” for his work on behalf of Irish Catholic emancipation, is well known.

As part of the Maine Irish Heritage Center’s quarterly series of DĂșchas (Heritage) talks, Dr. Erin Bishop will present a panoramic view of Mary O’Connell’s private world – a rare look at the lesser-known social and domestic life of the 19th-century Irish Catholic middle class.

Erin Bishop is the former Director of Education for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. She obtained an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from University College Dublin, where she explored the lives of 19th-century women. She has published two books on the life of Mary O'Connell, one of which is used in coursework on Marriage and Family in Ireland at Queens University, Belfast. Erin lives in Falmouth and works as an independent researcher, writer and museum consultant. Admission is free; all are welcome.

Your Money in the Media Seminar

Gorham Savings Bank Celebrates Money Smart Week- Your Money in the Media Seminar

Some fun and valuable ways to keep up with the right news at the right time Wednesday, April 25th, 6-8 pm

One of the most important influencers to the financial world is the news that is reported about it. Keeping current on news can help in two ways, giving you the facts behind the markets, and understanding what people are talking about. They say market shifts are as much psychologically based as financially based. How do you sort through all the news out there?

Now that smart phones and tablets, like the iPad, are bringing us so much more news, we need to have a news plan to make sense of it all. Come hear from a professional in news aggregation, Stefan Willimann, founder of Maine News Simply and from Gren Blackall, director of marketing at Gorham Savings Bank. They will discuss how they approach staying informed in our cluttered media with the right news at the right time.

Land Conservation in Maine: Projects in the Works

Why do Wall Street jitters make it harder for Maine nonprofits to protect land? What about severe constraints on funding of state and federal conservation programs? Can land preservation happen in a tough economy? Rare opportunities for land and easement purchases in Maine could add to acreage protected for recreation and wilderness. Important Maine land conservation leaders will discuss how conservation happens and how they’ve adjusted to the current economy. Meet these influential directors who will respond to your questions and comments.

• Mark Berry, Downeast Lakes Land Trust, executive director, protecting 370,000 acres in Grand Lake Stream;
• Diano Circo, Trust for Public Land: recipient of $8.73 million federal grant for Crocker Mountains and Orbeton Stream;
• Alan Hutchinson, Forest Society of Maine, executive director, protecting 1 million acres in Maine; and
• Bryan Wentzell, AMC’, Maine Policy Director, protecting a 63-mile conservation corridor in the North Maine Woods.

The program begins at 7pm on Wednesday, April 11th, at Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm,

This program is co-sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Maine Audubon and is free and open to the public.
