A hands-on mark-up session to brainstorm concepts for future transportation investment and land use patterns as informed by local and national planners, developers, and employers who will make it happen.


THE FACILITATORS:
Thomas Brennan, Principal at Nelson\Nygaard, has special expertise in transit service design and policy, parking management, TDM and strategic transportation planning. He has led many of the firms largest transit system planning and multimodal transportation planning projects. He is one of the firm’s leading experts on outreach, facilitation and stakeholder involvement. Thomas was the project manager for the Metro (Portland, OR) Regional High Capacity Transit System Plan, which developed a 30-year vision for expansion of light rail transit in a three-county metropolitan region, working for Oregon Metro and closely with regional transit providers and local jurisdictions. This project won the Oregon Public Transit Association 2009 Project of The Year Award and is receiving national attention from the Federal Transit Administration and the USDOT for its innovative approach to using performance based measures for allocating regional high capacity transit resources.

Geoff Slater, Principal at Nelson\Nygaard’s Boston office, has 30 years experience working as a consultant, in senior management at Boston’s MBTA, and for MPO’s. Geoff has extensive experience throughout the United States and internationally. Notable projects have included redesign of Pittsburgh’s transit service, the development of one of the country’s first BRT lines (Boston’s Silver Line) and the redesign of commuter rail service throughout post-apartheid South Africa. Other projects have included a number of bus and rail corridor studies, the redesign of bus services in many American cities, and the development of new rail, BRT, and bus services.


David M. Taylor, Senior Vice President HDR, National Director, Sustainable Transportation Solutions, is a frequent national speaker on TOD and sustainability and an expert in the development of new streetcar systems that are now recognized as important catalysts for economic development. An accomplished charrette organizer and leader, he has led charrettes in Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, California, New Jersey and Washington state. As the national leader for HDR’s TOD practice, Mr. Taylor has multiple systems plans, transit corridor plans, Major Investment Studies, Alternatives Analyses, and supporting environmental documents. Recent projects includes Virginia Beach, VA AA and Station Area Planning, Atlanta to Macon Intercity Rail Station Area Planning, Cedar Hill, TX City Center/TOD Plan, the New Orleans to Baton Rouge Intercity Rail Station Area Planning, Cincinnati’s Oasis Commuter Rail Station Area Planning, the Transit Master Plan for Rancho Cordova, CA and the Cobb County, GA Station Area Planning. His work includes over 150 station area planning and development projects, including codes and ordinances.

Yarmouth Art Festival

Yarmouth Art Festival


The second annual Yarmouth Art Festival will be held Oct. 20-23 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church at 396 Gilman Road. The juried show, created in 2009 as a new showcase for Maine artists, will feature painting, outdoor sculpture, photography, etching and digital media.

Every piece will be available for sale, with proceeds helping support St. Bart’s community service programs.

The show will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An artists’ reception, including music and refreshments, will be held Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Admission will be free for both the festival and the reception, with donations accepted. This year’s jurors are Chris Thompson, an associate professor at the Maine College of Art in Portland; Elizabeth Moss, owner of Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth; and Anne Haas, art librarian at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

When Maine Preservation Executive Director Greg Paxton moved to Maine in 2008, he and his family chose to live in Yarmouth. Before enjoying Yarmouth’s 2nd Historic House Tour, learn about Yarmouth’s historic architectural styles and see the town through a preservationist’s eyes. .

Historic Homes of Yarmouth Tour

The Yarmouth Historical Society invites the public to experience the rich heritage and historic architecture of one of the earliest sections in Yarmouth. Walk through the Lower Village and learn what is inside of each historic home and building on the tour, including one of the oldest homes in Yarmouth.

Docents welcome guests at each location, and explain the unique history and special features of that particular site. The event starts at 9:45 AM at the Yarmouth Town Hall, 200 Main Street, Yarmouth. Guests will pick up programs that will include a list of the houses on the tour, a map of the area and historical notations. Guests are welcome to plan their tour, at their leisure.

Stop at one location or see them all. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. Advance tickets are available from the Yarmouth Historical Society, Yarmouth Community Services, or Bath Savings Institution in Yarmouth. A benefit party for Safe Passage

10th annual Studio Opening and Latin Dance Party to benefit Safe Passage

Photographer Richard G. Sandifer will hold an open studio event at 151 Newbury Street, Portland and welcome the public from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, to present: “New Photos: The California Landscape”.
For this series of images Sandifer traveled through the heart of California for two weeks in the Spring of 2010. The photographs are a portrayal of the rugged beauty that makes California famous: the baking desert of Joshua Tree National Park, the cold snowy spine of the High Sierra Nevada Mountains, the wave-pounded coastline of the North Pacific Ocean.
This year, Sandifer has again teamed with Safe Passage (www.safepassage.org ), a local non-profit based in Yarmouth, to raise awareness of the organization and its work to improve the lives of impoverished children in Guatemala, whose parents scavenge in the Guatemala City garbage dump for salable goods to recycle.
 
Donations at the door will be donated to Safe Passage. Live acoustic music will be provided by the Jason Spooner Trio. Pizza will be provided by Portland Pie Company. Bruce’s Burritos serves up Mexican food, Clayton’s Cafe delivers sweet treats, and the Royal Bean brews freshly roasted coffee. Refreshments will be provided by Shipyard Brewing Company. The event will switch gears at 9 p.m. when professional DJ “Johnny Mambo” dials up his sound system and plays a wide variety of latin dance music: salsa, merengue, cumbia, cha-cha and more. This year's theme, "Three Cheers for Champions — Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow", honors Herbie the 217-year-old Champion American Elm tree, who Yarmouth lost this year after a 50-year battle with Dutch elm disease, as well as Frank Knight, the man who championed Herbie's survival through those 50 years and 14 bouts of the killer disease.

Frank — now 101 years old! — will lead the parade as grand marshal, and float designs will celebrate champions of every kind — those who have inspired us in all aspects of life: sports, imagination, education, social action, the environment...DON'T MISS THIS PARADE — It'll be the best ever!

In 1810, subscription papers were circulated by local citizens to "erect a school-house in which youth of both sexes might have an opportunity of receiving a better education." NYA was chartered in 1814 and has now been meeting its original mission for almost 200 years. A detailed history of the institution is being prepared. We'd like your help. Place-based Historian Jay Robbins has been involved with NYA since 1991 as a parent, as an archaeologist and as the compiler of a 2005 preliminary draft Bicentennial History of the school. Jay will share his research with us and will encourage us to share our memories.
