Land Conservation in Maine: Projects in the Works

Why do Wall Street jitters make it harder for Maine nonprofits to protect land? What about severe constraints on funding of state and federal conservation programs? Can land preservation happen in a tough economy? Rare opportunities for land and easement purchases in Maine could add to acreage protected for recreation and wilderness. Important Maine land conservation leaders will discuss how conservation happens and how they’ve adjusted to the current economy. Meet these influential directors who will respond to your questions and comments.

• Mark Berry, Downeast Lakes Land Trust, executive director, protecting 370,000 acres in Grand Lake Stream;
• Diano Circo, Trust for Public Land: recipient of $8.73 million federal grant for Crocker Mountains and Orbeton Stream;
• Alan Hutchinson, Forest Society of Maine, executive director, protecting 1 million acres in Maine; and
• Bryan Wentzell, AMC’, Maine Policy Director, protecting a 63-mile conservation corridor in the North Maine Woods.

The program begins at 7pm on Wednesday, April 11th, at Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm,

This program is co-sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Maine Audubon and is free and open to the public.
